Marimba Pacifica + Peace Tribe

  • Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center 1317 San Pablo Avenue Berkeley, CA, 94702 United States (map)

Show at 8:00pm

Marimba Pacifica, California’s oldest marimba ensemble, combines joyous musical traditions from across the globe.

The one thing that connects the various styles of California’s oldest marimba ensemble, Marimba Pacifica, is that they all are happy styles. With handcrafted marimbas, the ensemble plays music from around the world: Latin and African dance music, reggae and jazz, and songs to the Goddesses. Launched in 1988 by Hadley Louden, Marimba Pacifica has visited Ashkenaz at least 10 times in the 28 years since. Current members include Hadley Louden (marimba, vibes, percussion, vocals), Seth Tager (trap drum set), Orlando Obligacion (hand percussion), Tracy Richardson (bass marimba), Ashanti “Cas’ti” Johnson (lead vocals), Lydia Roux (violin and marimba), with special guest and former band members.

Bay Area-based Peace Tribe is a world music band with conscious lyrics and uplifting dance beats led by Hawaii’s Jaris Dreaming. Dreaming has been performing since the 1960s in various bands around North America and Europe. Peace Tribe is his latest project, formed a few years ago. The consciously uplifting music of Peace Tribe is spread across various musical genres, including jazz, rock, folk, reggae, funk, pop, samba, and heartsong. Dreaming’s songs are positive, about raising consciousness and celebrations of peace, joy, and love. With the band providing harmonies and intricate instrumental work, Peace Tribe delivers a concert for dancing while raising spirits. Along with Jaris Dreaming on guitar, bass, and lead vocals, he is joined by singer Stephani Hinckle, keyboardist Jay Mayer, bassist Andius Jent, saxophonist Leonard , and drummer Rian, Chris Cohn on percussion, plus a few special guests.
